Wednesday, August 22, 1979 BARTERING TAXABLE Bartering, or the exchange of goods or services for goods or services of equal value, is an American tradition that carries Federal income tax respon sibilities, the Internal Revenue Service says. Income from any source is taxable, according to the IRS, and, in the case of barter^, the tax is computed on the fair market value of the goods or services exhanged. For example, an auto mechanic repairs a carpenter’s truck in exchange for repair work per formed by the carpenter in the auto mechanic’s office. Both individuals must report the services received as income at fair market value. However, both may claim the fair market value of the repair work received as a business expense on their income tax returns. Only 28 persons showed up all day to contribute 27 pints. Four were first time donors. John Buchholz, Sr. completed his seventh gallon. First time donors were Elizabeth Evans, Susan Honey-!> cutt, Raymond McLellan and Carol Patterson, all of Southern Pines. Working on their second gall were Edna Cole, Barbara Granger and Robert Patterson of Southern Pines, Phyllis Hinton of Pinehurst, and Ronald Huff of Raeford. Joseph Currie of Southern Pines is starting on his third gallon. Barry Blakley of Pinehurst and Fran Steinsieck of Southern Pines are on their fourth gallon. “Thank goodness for a few conscientious citizens. But where were the dozens of other donors who could have been there had they cared?” a spokesman said. “Many were aware of the Bloodmobile visit through newspapers, radio, church an nouncements, published schedule, posters and Jaycee sponsorship, but it would seem that most of our community! just don’t care. It is hard to un derstand who is expected to provide the 250 to 300 pints of blood needed each month right here in Moore County at Moore Memorial Hospital.” The Red Cross Bloodmobile will make its regular summer visit to Stanley Furniture at West End next week on Tuesday, August 28, from 10 to 3:30. Although plant employes provide most of the donations, some assistance is needed from the West End and Seven Lakes communities to meet the goal. Call 692-8571 to make an ap pointment and save time.
